Port Profiles: Barry Ross
Meet Barry Ross, one of Port of Aberdeen’s Port Operatives who joined the port in October 2022.
From fireman to operations
Growing up, Barry’s career aspirations changed frequently, but one of his earliest ambitions was to become a fireman. Inspired by Fireman Sam, he envisioned himself tackling fires and helping others, a testament to his desire for an active and impactful role.
Barry’s journey to the port began with a suggestion from his dad, who works in the port’s marine support services team. At the time the role was advertised, Barry was working in a warehouse and was keen to trade his long, hot summers indoors for a more dynamic and outdoor-focused role. This decision marked the beginning of a rewarding career for Barry at the port.
Embracing variety
Barry was drawn to the Port Operative role by its hands-on nature and the opportunity to work outdoors. His current responsibilities are diverse, ranging from tying-up vessels at South Harbour to supplying fresh and potable water to ships at both South Harbour and Torry Marine Base. Whether deploying fenders or preparing for cruise season, Barry’s work helps to ensure smooth operational activities and a well-maintained environment for all port users.
The heart of the job
Vessel berthing is the highlight of Barry’s role, providing a perfect mix of challenge and reward. On a sunny day, the job becomes even more enjoyable, showcasing the unique appeal of life at Port of Aberdeen.
However, berthing vessels also presents its own challenges, requiring close teamwork with his other Port Operative, Dock Control Officer, Marine Pilot, and Vessel Traffic Services colleagues to ensure every operation runs seamlessly.
Growing with the port
Since joining Port of Aberdeen at the young age of 18, Barry has gained invaluable experience in the maritime industry and credits the port for providing an environment that supports his professional growth. He has also developed a strong understanding of health and safety practices through his close working relationship with his Operations, Marine, and SHEQ Department colleagues.
A vibrant team culture
Barry describes the port as a progressive, friendly, and rewarding place to work. He appreciates the supportive environment and camaraderie among colleagues, which make even the most demanding days manageable. His advice to new recruits would be to stick with it and embrace the welcoming culture that defines the port.
Beyond the port limits
Outside of work, Barry leads an active and adventurous life. A passionate football fan, he plays regularly attends matches at Pittodrie to support Aberdeen Football Club. Fitness is also a key part of his routine, and he also enjoys wild camping throughout the year.
In his downtime, Barry loves to travel and his passion for music has him attending gigs and concerts whenever possible. He also enjoys gaming and is a fan of movies and combat sports.
Whether on the quayside or during his leisure time, Barry brings enthusiasm and energy to everything he does, embodying the dynamic spirit of Port of Aberdeen.
