Port Profiles: Alison Munro
Meet Alison Munro, Port of Aberdeen's Engineering and SHEQ Administrator who joined the port in January 2021.
A diverse role
Alison's position at Port of Aberdeen is both varied and fulfilling. Splitting her time between the Engineering and Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) Departments, Alison works from two locations, the Maintenance Department and the port’s main office on Regent Quay.
Her daily tasks include extensive use of the My Compliance and Business Central digital platforms, and management of the Maintenance Defects System. Though her responsibilities within each department differ, Alison finds her work rewarding.
Childhood dreams and a career journey built on adaptability
While Alison initially dreamed of being a journalist, the lack of local courses in Aberdeen led her to study Management.
A 15-year career in Facilities Management followed before a career break to raise her two children. Alison returned to work part-time in Facilities Management for DNGVL, then added part-time reception work for the port, before moving into her full-time Administrator role.
The spirit of the port
Alison values the variety of her role, where no two days are the same. Balancing a dual role for two departments does bring its challenges, especially when reactive tasks arise. Alison enjoys the dynamic and exciting nature of her work as well as the camaraderie across departments.
If Alison could trade roles with anyone at the port, she’d choose a job at the Marine Operations Centre, just for the beautiful panoramic views!
Life outside of work
Outside of her professional life, Alison enjoys walking, travelling, and spending time with her family, often visiting her two children who both now live in Glasgow.
A valued member of the team
Alison’s career path and achievements reflect her commitment and versatility, which are important qualities for supporting the busy Engineering and SHEQ Departments.
