Port of Aberdeen showcases leadership in offshore wind at major conference
Port of Aberdeen had a significant presence at the Renewable UK and Scottish Renewables Floating Offshore Wind Conference, held at P&J Live from October 9–10.
As both an exhibitor and key sponsor, the port was represented by several key members of its team, who shared updates on its commitment to supporting offshore wind development and decarbonisation.
The port’s commercial and communications teams provided updates on its transformational South Harbour expansion, including the proposed £25 million dredging project which will deepen 750m of quayside to-14.5m chart datum, providing suitable depth for the majority of ScotWind and INTOG project turbine designs.
The port will also see investment to transition facilities at North Harbour to support offshore wind operations and maintenance (O&M), priming Port of Aberdeen to be the leading O&M hub in Scotland.
Additionally, the team provided insights into Port of Aberdeen’s evolving role as a leading hub for innovation in maritime decarbonisation. Positioned at the forefront of clean maritime initiatives, Port of Aberdeen is working to reduce emissions and promote sustainability within the sector.
Notably, construction of Scotland’s largest commercial shore power system began in August 2024. This £4 million project will deliver clean electricity to vessels across seven berths, with the first power expected in March 2025.
Shore power technology will also be installed on North Harbour’s Regent Quay as part of Bibby Marine’s electric Service Operation Vessel ZEVI project. Additionally, Serco NorthLink’s passenger ferries will soon benefit from shore power infrastructure, supported by a significant investment from Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited.
Port of Aberdeen’s Business Development Manager, Kieran Morton expanded on these key topics on the ‘Time to get plans floating and headed to ports’ panel, where discussions focussed on how ports and developers can collaborate on essential upgrades to support offshore wind, and how lessons from the oil and gas sector can be applied to floating wind initiatives.
